The accident happened in the Ram sanehi ghat police station area of Barabanki. There were 150 passengers in the double decker bus. Actually, a bus was found in bad condition on the way, whose passengers had also come in this bus. The axle of the bus broke in the Ram sanehi ghat area. So the driver had parked the bus on the bridge of Kalyani river on the highway. After this, the passengers got down and lay under the bus, in front of it and around it. Meanwhile, at 11:30 pm, a speeding trailer coming from Lucknow rammed the bus from behind. Due to this, about 11 passengers got hit by the bus and the truck.While 7 died on the way to the hospital.
The driver of the trailer fled from the spot after the accident. There was a long queue of vehicles on the highway. This caused a traffic jam of about 5 km. The victims of the accident told that all the passengers on the bus were residents of different districts including Sitamarhi, Supaul in Bihar. These were all workers, who were going back to their respective villages to plant paddy.
Speaking to reporters at the hospital, Lucknow Zone ADG Satya Narayan Sabat confirmed that as many as 18 people have died in the "tragic mishap" that took place last night on the highway near Ram Sanehi Ghat in the Barabanki district. Several others still remain stuck under the bus, he said, adding that a rescue operation is currently underway. "Most of the passengers hailed from various districts in Bihar, including Sitamarhi and Saharsa," the police official said. "They were returning to their native state from Punjab and Haryana, where they had put up for work."
