An Indian aircraft IC 814 was hijacked on its way from Nepal to New Delhi in 1999 by a group of five masked Pakistani terrorists, who were members of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM). They ordered the flight to be taken to multiple locations, and eventually to Kandahar, then controlled by the Taliban. The five Pakistani hijackers were identified as Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Mistri Zahoor Ibrahim, and Shakir. They succeeded in their plans and secured the release of terrorists Maulana Masood Azhar, Sheikh Omar, and Mushtaq Zargar in exchange for those onboard IC814. After the release of the jailed terrorists, Indian passengers returned home but one passenger died on board.

Where are the three released terrorists now?

After being released from Indian custody, Masood Azhar started strengthening his terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pakistan. Masood Azhar then carried out the most terrorist attacks on India, including the attack on the Indian Parliament, the Mumbai attack, and the Pathankot airbase attack. The last attack by the terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed was on the CRPF convoy in February. 40 soldiers were martyred in this attack. The United Nations declared Azhar an international terrorist. Currently, Masood Azhar is suffering from a serious kidney disease and reportedly lives in Pakistan.

The terrorist named Umar Sheikh became most notorious for the murder of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl. It is alleged that he had framed Daniel Pearl and called him. Currently, he is lodged in a Lahore jail and is serving a sentence in the Daniel Pearl murder case. He has been sentenced to death in this case.

Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar has carried out many grenade attacks in Kashmir after being released. It is believed that he was also behind the terrorist attacks on CRPF soldiers. Mushtaq is originally from Kashmir. However, reports suggest that he now lives freely in Pakistan.
