IIT Mumbai and Guwahati’s alumnus secure top 2 ranks in UPSC result

With Union Public Service Commission’s 2018 result being announced, let’s check some facts and figures about India’s Civil Service Examination

New Delhi: Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday declared the final results of Civil Service Examination 2018 on its official website.  Kanishak Kataria of IIT Mumbai tops the list followed by Akshat Jain, an IIT Guwahati graduate. Srushti Jayant Deshmukh is the flag bearer for women securing an overall 5th rank.

The candidates qualifying for the Civil Service Examination will be appointed to Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Central Service of group A and B.

This year 759 candidates with 577 men and 182 women have qualified for the appointment to the Indian Administrative Service.

A test of mental tenacity:

Standing on the peak of toughness in terms of cracking it, IAS exams holds 900-1200 vacancies every year. Over 9 lakh candidates apply for it every year.

Till 2010, the number of bureaucrats in India was even less than 50,000.

The existing model of Indian Civil Service was formed after 1947. Satyendranath Tagore was the first Indian to join the Indian Civil Service in 1864. Cabinet Secretary is the highest position for an IAS officer.

It was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel vision that the civil services would unify the entire country after independence.

List of firsts in Civil services:

The first woman IAS officer was Anna George Malhotra in 1951.

P. Sivasankara Menon was the First Foreign Secretary of India.

Vijay Lakshmi Pandit, though not an IFS, was India first woman Ambassador.

N L Beno Zephine is the first 100% blind IFS officer.

Kiran Bedi is the first women IPS officer

When it comes to the performance of states in the prestigious Civil Service examination from 2011 to 2015 Uttar Pradesh (UP) produced the highest number of IAS officers with 118, followed by Rajasthan (97), Tamil Nadu (90) and Bihar (68).
