In a major development, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday reached the majority mark of 43 after a BJP councillor joined the party. Sulekha Bhagat who fought Jalandhar MC Elections 2024 on BJP's ticket from Ward Number 63 joined the AAP in the presence of MLA Mohinder Bhagat and Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh. Apart from Sulekha Bhagat, an independent candidate from Ward 46 Tarsem Lakhotra also joined AAP. Before, the Jalandhar MC Elections 2024, Tarsem's uncle was given the ticket by AAP, hence, he fought the poll as an independent candidate.
AAP emerged out to be the single largest party in the Jalandhar MC Election by securing 38 out of 85 wards but it missed the majority mark of 43.
Before Sulekha, Congress' Manmeet Kaur from Ward Number 47 joined AAP pushing the party's number 42. After the inclusion of Sulekha and Tarsem, AAP has now a majority of 43 and due to this, the party can now choose its candidate for the Mayor's post. On Sunday evening, 2 councillors joined the party pushing its winning seats tally to 41. Independent candidate winner from Ward 81 Seema Badhan and Congress candidate from Ward 65 Parveen Wasan joined AAP.
5 councillors have joined the Aam Aadmi Party in two days after Jalandhar MC Elections 2024. The five of them are-
- Seema Badhan- Independent Candidate from Ward 81
- Parveen Wasan- Congress candidate from Ward 65
- Manmeet Kaur- Congress candidate from Ward 47
- Sulekha Bhagat- BJP candidate from Ward 63
- Tarsem Lakhotra- Independent Candidate from Ward 46
