Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi announces Charanjit Singh Channi as the CM Face of Congress in Punjab. Respecting the sentiments of the Congress workers and people of Punjab, the Congress announced its Chief Ministerial face for Punjab on February 6.
During his virtual rally in Ludhiana, Rahul made the official announcement. Channi was among the favourite choice. It was a call between Navjot Singh Sidhu and Charanjit Singh Channi.
Congress party plays the Dalit card and selected Channi as CM face of Punjab. As the SC and ST community has taken the lion’s share of vote bank in Punjab, the Congress is pinning its hopes on Charanjit Singh Channi who belongs to the schedule caste community. The Congress has fielded him from two seats -- Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur -- in the state assembly polls.
Charanjit Singh Channi was the first Dalit leader to be appointed as the new Chief Minister of Punjab after Amarinder Singh resigned from the post. Mr. Channi belongs to the Ramdasia Sikh community and had voiced Dalit issues in the state. He too had revolted against Amarinder Singh’s administration taking a part in the anti-Amarinder campaign.
Channi, 47-year-old, was born in Makrona Kalan village, near Chamkaur Sahib and later his family settled in Kharar, where he worked as the municipal councilor for three terms and went on to become the President for two more.
