A suspect in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case has reportedly died in suspicious circumstances while in police custody at the Sadar police station in Kapurthala. It is reported that around 3:30 AM, the accused's health deteriorated, and he was rushed to the emergency ward of the Civil Hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
A judicial inquiry is being conducted into the matter. As of the time of writing this news, the post-mortem of the deceased, Vinod Kumar, is being conducted in the presence of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC) Bhavana Bharti. This was confirmed by DSP Sub Division Deepkaran Singh.
According to reports, on March 30, Bhulana police arrested a man named Vinod Kumar (aged 30, son of Melaram, a resident of village Sedo Bhulana) and recovered 5.89 grams of heroin and 25 narcotic pills from him. Subsequently, an FIR No. 70 was registered against the accused at Sadar police station. On March 31, after being presented in court, he was granted a one-day police remand for questioning.
DSP Deepkaran Singh stated that around 3:30 AM on Tuesday, Vinod Kumar's health suddenly worsened. He was immediately admitted to the Civil Hospital for treatment, where the duty doctor declared him dead. The DSP also mentioned that the family of the deceased had requested an investigation of the government CCTV cameras at the Sadar police station.
He also informed that a judicial inquiry into the incident is being conducted, and the post-mortem is being carried out by a board of doctors under the supervision of Honorable Judge Bhavana Bharti (JMIC).
