The Oklahoma university campus played host to a large number of policemen on Friday, who were called in when reports of an active shooter on campus emerged. According to reports, first responders stated that multiple shots had been fired and one victim was shot in the abdomen as a result. It was also said that the shooter was on the loose. Upon the arrival of the police and subsequently after the investigation, it was revealed that no active shooter or victims were found. When local news correspondents spoke to the highway patrol officials who were involved as well, they were told that the initial reports could not be corroborated upon investigation.
As a result, the police force remains on campus but the state of high alert has been lifted. The students have been told to remain inside and be prepared to hide and protect themselves as a precautionary measure. The Oklahoma University is preparing an official statement and is likely to organize a press conference soon, although they have refrained from doing so as of Friday night. The obvious issue here is the confusion caused and the fact that incase the initial reports of an active shooter are true, there might be a security risk involved. The university administration and police force have decided to be cautious and make sure they can ensure the safety of the many students who live and study on their campus.
Having said that, reports as of 10:57 pm local time suggest that this is a case of swatting. Swatting is the term used to describe a fake report made to law enforcement that inadvertently garners a lot of attention, as is the case here. Sources have also suggested that the reports made, were due to people using party poppers while taking pictures. If that is true, it would turn out to be an amusing incident that was blown out of proportion. The reality of the situation will be apparent only when the authorities or the university administration come out with their official statements.
