In a series of unfortunate events, Silvina Luna's health struggles unfolded over the years, ultimately leading to her tragic passing. Her medical journey began in 2015 when she sought treatment for kidney stones. However, doctors soon diagnosed her with renal insufficiency and hypercalcemia, necessitating weekly dialysis until a suitable kidney transplant became an option.
In 2016, Silvina embarked on a journey to Miami, where she sought the expertise of Dr. Cristian Perez, an Argentine doctor. Dr. Perez performed a procedure to remove a dangerous substance that had been injected into her buttocks during previous surgeries. Speaking to C5N television, Dr. Perez explained that Silvina had developed an autoimmune disease due to the medications used in these surgeries, leading to severe kidney failure and ultimately fatal consequences for all affected patients.
Despite her efforts to regain her health, Silvina's condition continued to deteriorate, resulting in her hospitalization on June 13. She remained under sedation for nearly two weeks, until June 29, when she was weaned off the ventilator.
On August 19, the hospital issued a statement indicating that Silvina had shown signs of improvement, breathing independently, and undergoing various forms of rehabilitation. However, a recent bacterial infection led to her re-intubation on Wednesday, August 30, and the heartbreaking decision to remove life support was made the following day.
The Buenos Aires Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation into the circumstances of Silvina's death, and her body has been sent to a city morgue for a thorough autopsy.
Notably, in February 2022, Dr. Anibal Lotocki, the surgeon responsible for the problematic procedures on Silvina and three other women, was sentenced to four years in prison in a medical malpractice lawsuit. Furthermore, in July, a court imposed a five-year ban on Dr. Lotocki's medical practice. However, despite these legal actions, Dr. Lotocki has not been incarcerated and remains free while the National Chamber of Criminal Appeals reviews his punishment, leaving questions about accountability and justice in the wake of this tragic saga.
