Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay met with the villagers of Ekanapuram in Kancheepuram district on Monday, expressing solidarity with their protests against the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur. The villagers have opposed the project for over 908 days, citing threats to their agricultural lands and livelihoods.
Vijay voiced his concerns, alleging potential hidden benefits for those in power behind the project and urging both Union and state governments to relocate the airport to a site with minimal impact on agricultural land and natural resources. “I am not against the idea of an airport,” Vijay stated, “but it should not be built in this area. The destruction of marshlands and farmlands will worsen global warming and increase the risk of frequent floods.”
Solidarity with farmers and environmental concerns
Addressing the villagers, Vijay recalled his opposition to the project during the Vikaravandi conference in October. He assured the villagers of TVK’s legal and moral support, saying, “We will initiate our legal battle, and I stand firmly with you.” He also criticized governments that propose projects at the expense of farmers and water bodies, labeling them “anti-people.”
Vijay commended the state government’s decision to oppose tungsten mining in Arittapatti but called for similar action in Parandur. He questioned the government's standards particularly targeting the DMK. “When in opposition, you opposed projects like the Salem Eight-Lane Highway and the Kattupali Port. Why not take the same stand now?” he asked. “The people are observant and will remain silent in the face of your theatrics.”
Vijay urged the villagers to remain steadfast in their faith, referencing their devotion to local deities such as Grama Devathai and Ellaiyamman. “As a member of your family, my party cadre will always stand with you,” he said. Vijay expressed disappointment at being denied Ekanapuram and prohibited from distributing pamphlets. “I wanted to meet you on the ground. Despite these hurdles, I chose this place to begin my political journey by seeking the blessings of farmers.” he declared.
State government defends airport project
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu defended the proposed airport, describing it as indispensable for the state’s economic growth. “The current Chennai airport cannot expand due to urbanization. The new airport will cater to over eight crore passengers in the coming decade,” he explained.
On Vijay's meeting with protestors, Thennarasu stated, “Anyone can meet them. Vijay can convey their concerns of the state and will address them.
As opposition to the Paraundur airport projects intensifies. Vijay’s involvement is expected to amplify the voices of affected farmers and bring greater attention to the environmental and social implications.
