Leaks from Australia's men's cricket team, according to Adam Gilchrist, are a "greater concern" than any perceived issues with Justin Langer's rigorous coaching style, and may "derail" the Ashes campaign this summer.
Since Australia lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to an Indian team last summer, speculation about Australian cricket coach Justin Langer's tactics has been rife, with anonymous individuals publicly expressing their displeasure with the coach.
After a story from the leading daily revealed a furious discussion between Langer and a Cricket Australia worker over a video posted to the cricket.com.au website during the team's Bangladesh trip, potential issues inside the Australian camp emerged once more.
While the champion wicketkeeper acknowledged that Langer has to work on any apparent flaws in his leadership style, he warned Cricket Australia against frequent leaks from the team's inner sanctum to the media.
"The greater issue, and if it doesn't get handled immediately, it will derail the summer," Gilchrist told in an interview. "These journalists have a direct line of communication with individuals within the inner sanctum there, and the people in that inner sanctum are willing to let it go out.”
"As a result, Cricket Australia must act immediately to solve this issue. If everyone agrees that the best thing to do is fire Justin Langer as a coach, do so as quickly as possible because it will just create a side problem that will continue to be a circus.”
Gilchrist updated his position after appearing to dismiss the first story last week by claiming Langer was not involved in an interaction with the CA worker.
Gilchrist said, "I don't think I adequately defined what I was trying to communicate." "I believe I was a little too focused on the journalists' reporting of it, implying that they were making it up.I don't think that, and it wasn't my purpose to imply that journalists create stories.
"They presumably got a taste of what it's like to be the centre of attention." But, sure, my sincerest apologies to everyone I may have upset. I'm only stating that they have the right to write anything they want, which they do.
"I'd stated that the primary issue in Bangladesh revolved around the team manager, and Justin wasn't the one who was substantially involved in a major incident." After that, Justin had a few words with some media person. But, in any case, we don't need to dwell on it.
"The major source of concern is the fact that there are leaks. Because the journalists I spoke with on Friday, once they contacted me, claimed to have direct access to the team. So that's something to be concerned about, and Justin is aware of it.”
The first Test of Australia vs England in the 2021 Ashes series is set to begin on December 8, with the first match taking place at the Gabba in Brisbane.
