After the Election Commission of India issued an order banning all roadshows and vehicle rallies as a part of election campaigning in the wake of the second wave of coronavirus, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee called off all her prescheduled public meetings on Thursday.

The decision, which stated that she would address all her meetings virtually, came in less than an hour after the EC's order which restricted the gathering of up to 500 people.

Mamata Banerjee took to the micro-blogging site to announce her decision and said she would reach to the masses virtually while adding that the latest schedule would be updated shortly.

According to the TMC, Mamata Banerjee was set to address the four public meetings on Friday starting at 11 am onwards from Durgapur West followed by another in Sripur Area Stadium in Bardhaman West at 12 pm. Apart from this, she had to address in Asansol at 1 pm and the last in Birbhum at 2 pm.

Notably, earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to cancel his scheduled visit to West Bengal to address the poll rallies due to the rising cases of Covid-19.
