Poll strategist Prashant Kishor while taking swipe at former Congress president and party leader Rahul Gandhi said that the grand old party is necessary for a strong opposition, but no single person has the "divine right" to lead it. PK's strong words follow Mamata Banerjee's recent jabs at the Congress leader in Mumbai.

Kishor, who is also the political advisor to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, said that Congress has lost 90 per cent of elections in the last 10 years and the Opposition leadership should be decided "democratically."

“The IDEA and SPACE that #Congress represents is vital for a strong opposition. But Congress’ leadership is not the DIVINE RIGHT of an individual especially when the party has lost more than 90% of elections in last 10 years. Let opposition leadership be decided Democratically,” he tweeted.

Kishor's remark comes a day after Mamata Banerjee while criticising Rahul, said that "How can one do politics if they do nothing and spend half of their time abroad? Continuous effort should be made in politics." Mamata also declared in Mumbai that "there is no UPA now" after meeting with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar.

Mamata Banerjee has been on a national expansion campaign to position Trinamool Congress (TMC) as a viable alternative to the Congress.

Prashant Kishor, whose induction into the Congress was rumoured only a few months ago, has been slamming the Congress for months. There were reports of Kishor having a plan for Congress revival, however, expected tie-up between the two sides broke up.

Since then, PK has been targeting Rahul Gandhi.

Taking a dig at Congress as the party leaders visited families of victims of Lakhimpur Kheri violence, Prashant Kishor tweeted, “People looking for a quick, spontaneous revival of GOP led opposition based on #LakhimpurKheri incident are setting themselves up for a big disappointment. Unfortunately, there are no quick fix solutions to the deep-rooted problems and structural weakness of GOP.”
