The answer is yes and no at the same time. Akelli is inspired by the true story of a Middle Eastern woman, however, the makers have tweaked the story to some extent. For instance, the makers of Akelli have shown the story of an Indian woman who gets kidnapped by ISIS terrorists in Mosul, Iraq. However, Akelli's storyline is indeed true. As mentioned above, Nushrratt Bharuccha plays the character of Jyoti who goes to Mosul, Iraq to work in a garment factory in order to solve her family's economic problem at home. Now, the question arises who is 'real-life Jyoti on whom the story is based on? Well, the answer has been kept under wraps by the makers as the woman was reportedly raped by warlords of ISIS terrorists which has also been shown in the movie.
Talking about Akelli, it is a story of courage, determination, and conviction. Jyoti is from Punjab and she goes to Mosul just to solve her family's financial condition. All was going well, until one day, ISIS terrorists took over the city and started killing different communities' people by abducting them. Similarly, Jyoti was taken hostage by the terrorists so that they could make her a sex slave. However, Jyoti accidentally kills one of the terror lords who was trying to force himself on her. Therefore she tried to flee from there, however, she was caught by a senior terrorist. Notably, the senior terrorist announces to her that she will be his fourth wife assuming that Jyoti is also a Muslim. However, Jyoti again manages to escape from the terrorist's house and ultimately goes on to escape the city. How, Jyoti manages to escape the city full of ISIS terrorists and its supporters is what you should see in movie theaters or on OTT once it arrives.
