Who was Major Mukund?

Major Mukund Varadarajan was an Indian Army Officer and a recipient of the Ashoka Chakra. Major Mukund was martyred while serving his country for the 44th Rashtriya Rifles, a unit of the Indian Army. Born on 12 April 1983 to a Tamil-speaking family, Mukund Varadarajan was a native of Paruthipattu Village, Avadi, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

As shown in the movie, Major Mukund was heading a special unit named 'CAT' of 44 Rashtriya Rifle that neutralised notorious terrorists like Altaf Baba and Asif Wani. However, during the operation to neutralise Asif Wani, he sacrificed his life for the nation.  Due to his ultimate sacrifice, Major Mukund Varadarajan was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his bravery during a counterterrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014. His wife Indhu received the prestigious honour on Republic Day. 

Who was the real-life Altaf Baba?

The movie showcased that Major Mukund's stature became more respected when he neutralised a terrorist named Altaf Baba. On digging deep, True Scoop found out that there was indeed a terrorist named Altaf Baba in the valley who was neutralised by the Indian Army. 

As per a report published in 2013, Altaf Baba was a "divisional commander" of the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) terror outfit. He was killed in a gunfight in Kashmir. IANS quoted a Police officer who said, "After receiving specific information about the presence of militants in Ichgosa village (of Pulwama district) police, Rashtriya Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force laid a cordon around the village and started searches."

"Militants hiding in the village started firing at the security forces, triggering a shootout which ended with the killing of Altaf Baba alias Gazi Baba, the divisional commander of JeM for south Kashmir," the officer said adding, "Altaf Baba joined the JeM outfit in 2008. He was motivated by Sajad Afghani alias Ahsan Bhai of Pakistan to join militant ranks."
