With less than two months left for assembly elections in Punjab, a shocking incident has become talk of the town. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Garhshankar constituency, Jai Kishan Roudi was attacked late at night on Tuesday.

According to reports, the incident took place near Nirankari Bhawan on Banga Road when the MLA was heading home late at night. The unidentified assailants rammed the MLA's car from behind, then attacked with sharp weapons. Mr Roudi's car was ransacked during the attack, but he and his driver were unhurt.

The police are investigating the attack and have arrested one accused so far. The authorities are raiding nearby locations to apprehend other suspects.

The offenders, according to MLA Roudi, were driving an Etios and smashed the driver's window. The driver was able to drive away while the attackers attempted to break the windshield.

"What would happen to the common man when even an MLA is not safe in Punjab?" Mr Rouri asked, referring to the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab.

"Punjab government has changed two DGPs in a month. Due to the instability on the top level, crime is on the rise in the state," he added.

The Aam Aadmi Party announced the candidacy of Jai Kishan Roudi from Garhshankar on December 10 when it released its second list of candidates for upcoming elections.

The Punjab assembly elections are scheduled early next year, with AAP trying to lure the people with several promises.

AAP was the second-largest party in Punjab in the 2017 elections, winning 20 of the total 117 seats. This time, the AAP's senior leaders are focusing on Punjab intending to capture power in the northern state.
