More than a month has passed since the Amritsar Municipal Corporation elections were completed in Punjab. However, the city is yet to get its new Mayor. Now, it is expected that Amritsar will get a new Mayor on 27 January i.e. Monday. For this, a meeting of the Municipal Corporation House has been called on Monday, in which the newly elected councilors have also been called.
It is expected that the Mayor will be elected by raising hands or by ballot paper in this meeting. At the same time, a hearing is also to be held in the Punjab Haryana High Court on Monday. Actually, both the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress have staked their claim for the election of Mayor in Punjab.
In the Amritsar MC Election, the Congress party won 40 seats. In the last 1 month, Congress touched the figure of 41 by adding 1 councilor. At the same time, reports suggest that Aam Aadmi Party has reached the figure of 40 even after the victory of 24 councilors.
According to the notification, the oath-taking ceremony will be held in the auditorium of Government Medical College on January 27 at 4 pm. During this, the election of the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor will be done by raising hands.
For this, GMC Principal Dr. Rajiv Devgan, Additional Commissioner of Corporation Surinder Singh, Joint Commissioner Jai Inder Singh, Assistant Commissioner Vishal Wadhawan, etc. have also been assigned duty.
Despite having 40 councillors, Congress seems to be far from the post of Mayor. Recently, on the orders of the high command, observer Harish Chaudhary, Punjab Chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Pratap Singh Bajwa reached Amritsar. They conducted voting to reduce the damage caused by factionalism.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party minister Kewal Dhaliwal and councillors have announced that the mayor will be theirs. On Friday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) inducted another councillor Amarjit Kaur from BJP's ward 35 into the party.
As per reports, BJP and Akali Dal are also going to vote in favour of the Aam Aadmi Party so that Congress cannot elect its own Mayor. In such a situation, Aam Aadmi Party's claim on the mayor seat seems to be getting stronger.
