Why is North India witnessing a chilling winter?

As per reports, Northwest India has been hit by a severe cold wave for nearly a month with thick fog impacting the movement of flights, trains, and vehicles. The weather department reportedly broken the reason behind prolonged cold waves into three factors -- the lack of any active western disturbance over Northwest India, prevailing El-Nino conditions, and a robust jet stream.

Typically, Northwest India experiences five to seven western disturbances in December and January, providing slight relief from the chilling weather conditions. However, such phenomena were absent this winter. While two western disturbances did hit the country -- one in December and another in January -- their impact was limited to Gujarat, north Maharashtra, East Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
