The Congress in Punjab is in a fix as they have to fight a tough battle to win elections in Amritsar. The situation at present is that the party may face setbacks in many seats. Amritsar East is the hottest seat of Punjab. Here the future of Congress state president Navjot Singh Sidhu and former Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia is at stake. Both have never seen defeat in their political career, this time one of the two will be labeled as defeat.
The party has also fielded Punjab deputy chief ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa from Dera Baba Nanak, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa from Fatehgarh Churian and Om Prakash Soni from Amritsar Central. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Tript Bajwa will also face a tough fight in their region; on the other hand, O.P. Soni still retains some chance to win from Amritsar Central.
Apart from them, the second hottest seat is Amritsar North. Here former IG Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh is in the fray on the Aam Aadmi Party ticket. On the other hand, former minister Anil Joshi, MLA Sunil Dutti and three-time councilor Sukhminder Pintu are also in the fray.
Former Congress MLA Harjinder Singh Contractor is in the fray on Amritsar South and AAP and Akali Dal are also seen giving competition to the Congress.
Talking about the 2017 assembly elections, Congress was in 10 of the 11 seats in Amritsar. Akali Dal is strong in Majitha this time too. On the other hand, Akali Dal and AAP have nothing to lose when it comes to the other 10 seats. Both the parties are playing freehand, adding seats in their accounts this time will only strengthen them.
