Angry locals stage protest at Singhu border against farmers, ask them to vacate

Many of the protesters said that they are facing problems due to the farmers’ protest and want them to clear the highway.

A group of angry locals at Singhu border have staged a protest against the farmers who have been agitating against the three farm laws for two months. The residents of the border area are demanding the removal of the farmers as they insulted the national flag during the tractor rally.  

With tricolour in their hands, angry villagers raised slogans ‘Singhu border Khali karo’ (vacate Singhu border).

Many of the protesters said that they are facing hardships due to the farmers' agitation and want the roads to be cleared. 

Protesters had gathered from around 10 nearby villages and said we are demanding them to leave the area politely if they don't listen, we’ll do what they did, said one protester. 

Another local protester said he owns a business which has been severely affected due to the ongoing farmers’ protest at Singhu border. 

On January 26, protesting farmers went on a rampage, attacked police and hoisted religious flags on the domes of Red Fort and placed the flagstaff at the ramparts of the monument, where the national flag is unfurled by the prime minister on Independence Day during the tractor rally. 

Meanwhile, given the escalating tension in the area, security was heightened as police barricaded the area and additional paramilitary forces were deployed. 

Outsiders entry has also been restricted towards the main stage area of farmers' protests.

The protesters vandalized public property and in the violence, nearly 400 policemen were injured. Multiple FIRs have been registered and notices have been served to more 20 farmer leaders to answer for the violence.

Farmers are protesting against Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
