In a horrific development, four people died including two minor students and two teachers after a 14-year-old boy opened fire in Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. As per US media reports, both the students who died are also 14 years old and both the teachers who died in the Georgia High School mass shooting are Maths teachers. Apalachee High School shooter has been identified as Colt Gray, 14, and he used an AR-15 style rifle to carry out the crime. US Law Enforcement Agency will now try Colt Gray as an adult due to the heinous crime he committed at Apalachee High School. Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey reportedly informed that Colt Gray will be charged with murder as an adult. Who is Colt Gray?
Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student at the school is not new to legal trouble. As per US media reports, FBI interviewed Colt Gray in 2023 regarding 'several anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting at an unidentified location and time'. Colt Gray's threats included photos of guns as well.
Not only Colt Gray but also his father was questioned during that time. "The father stated he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them,...The subject denied making the threats online. Jackson County alerted local schools for continued monitoring of the subject."
FBI statement further suggests that in 2023, there was no probable cause for Colt Gray's arrest or to take any additional legal action on the local, state, or federal levels.
Talking about Colt Gray's motive for shooting or Colt Gray mass shooting reason, it is yet unclear and has not been revealed by the agencies. It seemed he had no previous connection to the victims.
What happened in Apalachee High School?
Lyela Sayarath, who was in the alleged attacker's class was quoted by CNN. She recalled the horrific Apalachee High School mass shooting. She said that the suspect left the room at the beginning of their algebra lesson. She said he came back and knocked on the door, which had locked automatically, but another student refused to let him in after noticing he had a gun. Thereafter, Colt went to the classroom next door, where he began shooting.
For the unversed, the US government does not track school shootings. However, a newswire quoting media reports suggests that there have been 46 such shootings in 2024, which is higher than any year since 1999 - the year of the Columbine High School shooting in which 15 were killed. Reports further claim that more than 383,000 students have experienced shootings at schools.
