The premier league has excited fans with many unlikely scenarios coming to life in the 2022-2023 season. As match day 30 approaches on Saturday, Arsenal football club sits pretty atop the table with a healthy 8-point lead over 2nd placed Manchester City who still has a chance of taking the top spot if they maintain their stellar form. Considering the fact that they have a game in hand, Manchester City are in no mood to throw in the towel yet. As it stands, the race is set to be tight till the very end of the season with every reason to believe that a last-minute upset might be in the offing.
Other big clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have had relatively disappointing seasons. Manchester United’s recent loss to Newcastle meant that they vacated the 3rd place spot to take up the 5th behind 3rd placed Newcastle and 4th placed Tottenham Hotspurs. Liverpool remains further down the pecking order, placed 8th and have had a tumultuous time letting in too many goals while scoring very few, a recipe for disaster by their usual high standards. Their draw with Chelsea on Tuesday meant that they were unable to make inroads into the ranks of the top 4.
Chelsea by all means, have had the worse going out of the traditional big clubs in the league. Despite spending roughly 500 million pounds in the last two transfer windows and bringing in world class talent, they find themselves placed 11th. They have also had a hard going in terms of settling to the new owners as a poor run of form saw ex manager Graham Potter getting the axe. A head coach less, rudderless Chelsea came out like a bat out of hell against Liverpool but failed to get on the score sheet as two goals were disallowed by VAR. Despite the new found enthusiasm after the sacking of Graham Potter, the sight of multiple chances going a begging is something Chelsea fans have been witness to through out the season.
As the only two clubs in the running for the title, Arsenal and Manchester City have only themselves to compete with. If Arsenal manage to maintain their lead, they will be bringing the title back to the red part of London after almost two decades. The last time they won was when the fabled ‘invincibles’ Arsenal won the league in the 2003-04 season, going all season long without being beaten. Manchester City on the other hand wish to take back the title to put behind them the shadow of the many allegations of financial discrepancies made against the club earlier this year. With match day 38 approaching hard and fast and a very busy April ahead, the stakes have never been higher.
