The Center has raised serious concerns on Monday, regarding the alleged pro-Pakistan slogans previously attributed to National Conference leader Mohammad Akbar Lone, who is the main petitioner challenging the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution. A five-judge Bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, currently hearing petitions related to the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into union territories, has decided to seek a response from Lone regarding these allegations.
During the 15th day of the hearing, an advocate representing the NGO 'Roots in Kashmir' brought forth a startling revelation, claiming that Mohammad Akbar Lone had shouted pro-Pakistan slogans in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 2018 and on other occasions. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta immediately urged Lone to file an affidavit affirming his allegiance to the Indian Constitution and his opposition to secessionist forces and terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Mehta stressed that if Lone failed to take appropriate action, it could set a concerning precedent and potentially impact the ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in the region.
Emphasizing Lone's position as an MP and not an ordinary individual, Mehta underscored the gravity of the situation. Senior counsel V Giri suggested that Lone should issue an apology and that his submissions should only be considered if he expressed remorse for his pro-Pakistan slogans and statements.
