Ravichandran Ashwin on Monday found himself in a controversy after running Buttler out by 'Mankading' him in the first match of Kings XI Punjab against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2019. Kings XI Punjab eventually went on to win the match but the cricketing world has been divided into two opinions with some supporting the act by Ashwin while others opposing it.
'Mankading' is a cricketing term used when a bowler runs out the non-striker batsman if he leaves the crease before the ball has been bowled. Vinoo Mankad was the first ever batsman to get out this way and the dismissal got named 'Mankading' since then.
Cricketers across the globe took the issue to twitter and shared their opinions about the same. Here's what they tweeted:
"I can’t believe what I’m seeing!! @IPL Terrible example to set for young kids coming through. In time I think Ashwin will regret that."
- Eoin Morgan
"If @josbuttler had been warned well that fine ... if he hasn’t and it the first time I think @ashwinravi99 is completely out of order ... watch how often this happens from now on !!!!!!! #IPL"
-Michael Vaughan
"He ain’t winning any spirit of cricket awards is old ashwin"
-Dale Steyn
"It within the laws of the game but Jos Butler should have been warned by Ashwin before that. Very Surprised ! Remember Ashwin doing the same in an international game where Sehwag withdrew the appeal."
-Mohammad Kaif
"Lots of drama on the Buttler run-out. He was livid but the law and the advisory on it is clear. The bowler is within his right to run a player out at the non-striker's end if he is out of his crease"
-Harsha Bhogle
With the controversy having erupted in the very beginning of the IPL 2019, it will be interesting to see what BCCI has to say about the same.
