The group entered the vegetable market by breaking police barricades amidst lockdown in the state. When they were asked to show their curfew passes they denied and grew agitated.
The group then attacked the police personnel on duty along-with two other officials.
To tackle the situation, ASI Harjit Singh was bravely performing his duty when an agitated Nihang came and chopped off his hand with a sword.
ASI after being victim of violence gathered all his spirits, stood-up and rode two-wheeler conveyance to reach hospital. He rushed to the Rajindra hospital from where he was referred to PGIMER in Chandigarh.
Mr Dinkar Gupta, DGP Punjab called up to inform Dr Jagat Ram, Director PGI, Chandigarh around 7:45 am. Dr Jagat Ram activated the emergency team at Advanced Trauma centre, PGI and he gave the responsibility to Prof Ramesh Sharma, Head Department of Plastic Surgery to organize admission and hand re-implantation of a 50 years old patient from Patiala.
As per the deatils acquired from PGIMER, ASI Harjit Singh had an amputation through the proximal wrist of left hand. The reimplantation was started around 10 am after initial preparation of the amputated part. Both radial and ulnar artery, the vena commitantes and an extra dorsal vein were anastomosed. All the flexors and extensor tendons were repaired. All the nerves at the wrist repaired Bony fixation done using three K- wires. Apparently, the approximate time taken is about 7.5 hours.
The team of doctors, however said, it was technically very complex and challenging surgery, which has been successfully done. It was evaluated at the end of surgery that hand is viable, warm with good circulation.
