The group entered the vegetable market by breaking police barricades amidst lockdown in the state. When they were asked to show their curfew passes they denied and grew agitated.
The group then attacked the police personnel on duty along-with two other officials.
To tackle the situation, ASI Harjit Singh was bravely performing his duty when an agitated Nihang came and chopped off his hand with a sword. He then rushed to the Rajindra Hospital from where he was referred to PGIMER.
At PGIMER, Department of Plastic Surgery doctors did a successful re-implantation of hand. Technically complex operation ran for nearly 7.5 hours. It was evaluated at the end of surgery that hand is viable, warm with good circulation.
SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu while sharing news about successful operation and ASI's health said that actual condition will be known after 5 days.
Harjit Singh (48) is survived by his wife Balwinder Kaur and son Arshpreet and his parents live with his younger brother Gurjit in Rajpura, which is 20 kms away from Patiala.
ASI's son Arshpreet Singh came to know about the incident via TV news channel. Initially, he was disturbed by the act but then recalled of his mother and thought what would she feel after watching this. Thinking smartly, he cut off the cable connection so her mother could not get to know about the whole scenario.
Arshpreet then called his uncle--Gurjit who was on his way to see his brother, informed him that he had removed the TV cable so that mother could not see it.
At the same time, Gurjit appealed to the people to support the workers in such harsh time of epidemic. If we fight this battle together then we will easily beat coronavirus.
