Recently, a brutal clash occurred between Police officials and local villagers during the eviction drive in Assam’s Dholpur village. During this clash, two policemen died and nine were injured. During this clash, around two civilians were killed by the police and at least 20 were injured.
Today, the Assam government has ordered a judicial probe in the matter. As per the official notification, the inquiry would be conducted under the chairmanship of a retired Judge of Gauhati High Court.

“The Government in the Home and Political Departments have decided to institute an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of two civilians and injury of several others including police personnel in the firing incident that took place at Dhalpur area in Sipajhar Revenue Circle, under Darrang District on September 23, 2021,” the official notice stated.
The clash took place on Thursday when villagers protested against police for conducting an eviction drive in Number 3 Dholpur village under Sipajhar revenue circle.
Later, the clashes broke out and stones were pelted at police. Meanwhile, an eye-witnessed informed that the state was attacked by the security personnel and at last this led to the open fire by the police.
The deceased identified as Saddam Hussain and Sheikh Forid, out of nine injured policemen, Assistant Sub-Inspector Moniruddin is admitted and is in critical condition.
A senior police official, told media agency ET, “At around 1.30 pm people gathered they were demanding settlement before eviction. Brajenjit Singha, DIG, Assam Police Central West Region made attempts to pacify the protestors.”

The video of the incident is now viral on the internet. The video was reportedly shot on September 20 as the eviction drive has been going on since September 20.
An eye-witness, Sukur Ali said, “I was there when the incident happened. The incident took place at Dholpur 1 and Dholpur 3 village where some people pelted stones at the security personnel who had gone there to evict the encroachers. Some villagers also attacked security personnel. This led to police firing in the open and using tear gas shells.”
Darrang Superintendent of Police Sushanta Biswa Sarma, younger brother of Assam Chief Minister, also claimed that the police officers were attacked by the villagers with sharp weapons and stones. The fire was opened by police in self-defense and unfortunately, two civilians were killed.
