Janam Ashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, is celebrated on the 8th day which means Ashtami of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of Bhadra every year. This year Lord Krishna’s Birthday is observed on 26th August 2024. This is Lord Krishna's 5251st birthday.
According to the Puranas, during the Dwapar period, the atrocities of Kansa were increasing and then a voice came from the sky that the eighth child born from the womb of Kansa's sister, Devaki, would be the cause of his death. After this, Kansa imprisoned his sister Devaki and brother-in-law Basudev but when Lord Krishna was born, everyone was sleeping and his father Basudev went to Nand Gaur's house amidst heavy rain to save Krishna from Kansa and took the responsibility of raising his son. Method of worshipping Lord Krishna on Janam Ashtami
On the day of Janmashtami, wake up in the Brahma Muhurta, take a bath and wear clean clothes.Pray to God and take a pledge to keep fast on the occasion of Janam Ashtami. After this, worship Lord Krishna in his child form. Then make Lord Krishna bathe with panchamrut and worship him properly. Later offer Lord Krishna sweets, butter and other offerings. Then Swing Bal Gopal in the swing. At the end of the puja, perform Aarti of Lord Krishna and ask for forgiveness from Lord Krishna for the mistakes made in the puja.
