Academy Award-winning Hollywood filmmaker James Cameron's masterpiece Avatar is all set to be re-released in theaters worldwide. Avatar's theatrical release around the world comes as the build-up of its upcoming sequel 'The Way of Water'. Avatar 2 or The Way of Water will be released in theaters worldwide on December 16 this year starring Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. Interestingly, reports suggest that Avatar 2 will be available for a 'two-week limited engagement' in theaters.
Now, coming Avatar re-release date, James Cameron on Tuesday announced that his 'masterpiece' is coming back to theatres worldwide on September 23 in remastered 4K High Dynamic Range format. Cameron's epic sci-fi film’s re-release comes three months before the arrival of its much-anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water on December 16. Interestingly, Disney+ Hotstar has removed Avatar ahead of the theatrical re-release. However, it will return to the studio’s streaming platform at a later date just before the release of Avatar: The Way of Water.

The Way of the Water follows the events of Avatar and focuses on the Sully family. Cameron, who is still in New Zealand putting the final touches on 'Avatar 2', appeared in a pre-recorded video to tell exhibitors about the film. It is pertinent to mention here that Avatar 1 was released in way back in 2009 and fans are waiting for its Avatar sequel ever since.
Notably, Cameron’s Avatar became the top-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office with more than USD 2.8 billion in revenues. In fact, it was nominated for nine Academy Awards including best picture and best director, and won three Oscars, for best cinematography, production design, and visual effects.
Furthermore, in 2010, a special extended theatrical re-release of Avatar exclusively in 3D theatres and IMAX 3D fetched USD 44 million worldwide. Early last year, the re-release of the movie in China raised USD 57.7 million.
