What is Heteropaternal Superfecundation?

Heteroparental Superfecundation reportedly happens when two episodes of sexual intercourse with two separate partners take place, with very little time gap between them. On parental test, reports may suggest that there are two fathers of a single unborn child. The term superfecundation is derived from the word - fecund. This refers to the ability to produce offspring.

On the other hand, Homoparental superfecundation is the process of fertilising two ova by the same sperm, leading to fraternal twins. In the case of Heteroparental superfecundation, the twins are half-siblings who share the mother but not the father.

Real Life Heteropaternal Superfecundation Cases

In 2022, a rare medical condition was all over the news after a 19-year-old Brazalian woman gave birth to twins who had two different biological fathers. The unnamed 19-year-old girl from Minerios in Goias, Brazil, explained that she took a paternity test because she wanted to confirm who the father was using the sample of the person she had thought was the father. However, after the test she found that only one of her kids showed positive for the DNA test while the other one did not. According to report, after the test she remembered having involved in an intercourse with another man on the same day, whose DNA then matched with the second twin.

Before, this, in 2009, a woman in Dallas gave birth to a pair of such twins. The woman named Mia Washington gave birth to twins Justin and Jordan while she was with her fiancee James Harrison. She admitted that she had an affair during the time the twins were conceived. Since the twins looked extremely different, they had a paternity test and it was revealed that they were fathered by different men.

Following this, in 2013, another case of Heteropaternal Superfecundation came out in Turkey where the parents took a paternity test since one of the twins had a different blood group. They said that one of the children was not theirs. The results found that the second twin was not fathered by the husband of the woman.

As per the National Library of Medicines, in August 2018, the Grupo de Genética de Poblaciones e Identificación at Universidad Nacional de Colombia received a request to establish the paternity of a pair of male twins with genetic markers. The results indicated that the twins have different biological fathers.
