Baisakhi is celebrated with joy and vibrancy in the villages of Punjab and Haryana. Traditional ‘Bhangra’ and ‘Gidha’ are performed by men and women respectively. On Baisakhi, Sikhs visit gurudwara and perform kirtans. People bath in rivers and lakes before visiting the gurudwaras.
Why Baisakhi is celebrated?
Baisakhi marks the formation of Khalsa Panth by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, in 1966. The Khalsa Panth was Sikh warriors who fought against the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. On this day, people remember the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, in 1919.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh greeted Punjabis across the world on the sacred occasion of the Sajna Divas of the Khalsa Panth and Baisakhi, which symbolizes the spirit of Punjab, Punjabi, and Punjabiat. Amarinder Singh said this festival also marked the onset of the harvest season and the ripening of crops.
"Let us pray to Akalpurkh to keep us, and our Punjab, in the Charhdi Kala, to keep us safe and happy always," said the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister called upon the people to celebrate the historic festival in a spirit of brotherhood but with strict adherence to the Covid-19 safety norms as this is a different Baisakhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted and wrote, “May the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi bring happiness and prosperity in everyone’s lives.”
PM Modi wrote, “May our field flourish and may it inspire us to take care of our planet.” PM also mentioned that the festival has a special link between our hardworking farmers and nature.
