In January 2024, banks in India will observe a total of 16 holidays, including second and fourth Saturdays, Sundays, and other regional holidays.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has categorized these holidays under three brackets: Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act; Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holidays; and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

As per the RBI, both private and PSU banks in India will remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, while operating full-day on other Saturdays. Additionally, banks will be closed on Sundays.

Here are the specific bank holiday dates for January 2024:

January 1 (Monday) – New Year’s Day: Banks will be closed in Aizawl, Chennai, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata, and Shillong.

January 2 (Tuesday) – New Year’s Celebration: Banks will remain closed in Aizawl.

January 11 (Thursday) – Missionary Day: Banks will be closed in Aizawl.

January 12 (Friday) – Birth Day of Swami Vivekananda: Banks will be closed in Kolkata.

January 15 (Monday) – Uttarayana Punyakala/Makara Sankranti Festival/Maghe Sankranti/Pongal/Magh Bihu: Banks will be closed in Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad – Andhra Pradesh, and Hyderabad – Telangana.

January 16 (Tuesday) – Thiruvalluvar Day: Banks will be closed in Chennai.

January 17 (Wednesday) – Uzhavar Thirunal/Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Birthday: Banks will be closed in Chandigarh and Chennai.

January 22 (Monday) – Imoinu Iratpa: Banks are closed in Imphal.

January 23 (Tuesday) – Gaan-Ngai/Netaji’s Birth Day: Banks are closed in Imphal and Kolkata.

January 25 (Thursday) – Thai Poosam/Birthday of Md. Hazarat Ali: Banks are closed in Chennai, Kanpur, and Lucknow.

January 26 (Friday) - Republic Day: Banks will not be closed in all states.

Bank customers should be aware that although the physical branches will be closed during these listed holidays, digital services such as mobile banking, UPI, and Internet banking will remain operational without any disruptions.
