Bank Under Siege Real Story
As claimed by the makers, Bank Under Siege is inspired by true story when a group of eleven hooded men burst into Barcelona's Central Bank and held at least 200 people insdei the bank as a hostage. At first, it seemed like a normal heist but as the time past it soon turned political when the robbers demanded the release of Colonel Tejero and the other leaders of the 23-F coup.
The robbers threatened the Spanish government to execute 200 hostages if they did not release Colonel Tejero and the other leaders. While the authorities attempt to negotiate and rescue the hostages, the situation gradually spirals out of control. As per New York Times report, after taking over the bank, the gunmen reportedly hooded themselves to avoid identification, strengthening the impression that they might be security personnel. Their movements were said to be crisp and professional as they controlled their hostages. Notably, the report did not reveal what happened to robbers in the end.

Colonel Tejero aka Antonio Tejero Molina is a Spanish former lieutenant colonel of the Guardia Civil. Colonel Tejero was the key figure in the failed coup d'état against the newly democratic Spanish government on 23 February 1981. On 23 February 1981, Tejero entered the Congress of Deputies, the lower house of the Spanish Parliament, with 150 Guardia Civil members and soldiers and held the congress members hostage for some 22 hours. After King Juan Carlos I denounced the coup, the soldieres surrendered and hence were arrested. After spending years in jail, Colonel Tejero was reportedly released from prison in December 1996.
