After Rahul Dravid, BCCI Eying VVS Laxman To Lead NCA

If Laxman accepts the NCA job, he will have to resign from all of his other positions to prevent any conflict of interest issues, as a former player/official is not allowed to hold more than one position inside the BCCI structure at the same time.

Following Rahul Dravid's appointment as head coach of the national men's team, the BCCI is eyeing VVS Laxman to lead the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

Laxman, who is now in the UAE working as a pundit and analyst for the host broadcaster for the T20 World Cup, is awaiting clarification on his role and other information from the board, according to a leading daily.

Dravid retired as NCA director last month after a two-year tenure during which he established processes for injury management, player rehabilitation, coaching programmes, and the development of age-group and women's cricket roadmaps.

The head of the NCA must be based in Bengaluru. The academy is based in the city, now at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, and the BCCI has started work of a new, state-of-the-art facility on the outskirts of the city, which received permissions late last year. If Laxman succeeds, he will have to relocate from Hyderabad, his homeland.

In addition to being a broadcaster and cricket analyst, Laxman is the current coach of IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. Laxman also worked as a batting consultant for the Bengal Cricket Association till earlier this year. After being recruited by Sourav Ganguly, a former India teammate and captain, he held the post for six years.

If Laxman accepts the NCA job, he will have to resign from all of his other positions to prevent any conflict of interest issues, as a former player/official is not allowed to hold more than one position inside the BCCI structure at the same time.

Dravid will succeed Ravi Shastri as head coach of the men's squad after the ongoing T20 World Cup in the UAE, it was announced earlier this month. Dravid's two-year contract will begin on November 17 with the home series against New Zealand.

Dravid's nomination, which was confirmed by the cricket advisory council, which included Sulakshana Naik and RP Singh, was always a possibility after he submitted a formal application. Ganguly, who is now the BCCI president, convinced his old colleague to do so.

"Rahul's work at the NCA has cultivated a number of young cricketing stars who have gone on to represent the country at the international level," Ganguly stated at the time. "I am optimistic that his new contract will propel Indian cricket to new heights." Rahul has a distinguished playing career and is considered one of the game's greats. He has also distinguished himself in Indian cricket as the Head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

After four years as the coach of India A and India Under-19, Dravid was named director of the NCA. India reached two Under-19 World Cup finals during his tenure, losing one (against West Indies in 2016) and winning the other (against Australia in 2018).
