The Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has set a goal to establish Punjab as an international tourist destination by 2030. As part of this vision, the government is committed to preserving the state's rich culture, art, and heritage.
Currently, cities like Amritsar, Rupnagar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Fatehgarh Sahib attract a significant number of tourists. However, the government now plans to spotlight other cities across Punjab, aiming to place them on the tourism map. This expansion is expected to create new employment opportunities for the state’s youth.
To achieve this, the Punjab Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has introduced a calendar of vibrant fairs and festivals, with 24 events planned throughout the year. These include notable celebrations such as the Madhi Mahotsav in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Kapurthala Heritage Festival, Kila Raipur Rural Olympics in Ludhiana, and the Patiala Heritage Festival.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann emphasized the government’s dedication to promoting Punjab as a global tourist hub. "The rich and glorious heritage of Punjab has fascinated people for centuries. Every corner of this land bears the legacy of Gurus, Pirs, martyrs, and poets. While Amritsar welcomes nearly one lakh devotees daily, we are now focusing on showcasing the unique aspects of other places in Punjab. The memorials of martyrs in every village are stories of sacrifice that deserve global recognition," he stated.
CM Mann also highlighted Punjab’s geographical advantages and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to elevating the tourism sector, ensuring it contributes significantly to Punjab’s progress and prosperity.
Several heritage festivals have already been successfully organized, including Baba Sheikh Farid Aagaman in Faridkot, Hari Singh Nalwa Josh Mahotsav in Gurdaspur, and Chhinj Mela in Tarn Taran.
In order to enhance tourist safety, the government is launching a dedicated tourism police initiative. This scheme, starting as a pilot project in Amritsar, will see specially trained personnel in distinctive uniforms, ensuring they are easily identifiable by visitors.
This comprehensive plan highlights the state’s determination to transform Punjab into a global tourism destination, celebrating its heritage while unlocking growth and development.
