The Congress has today released a list of 30 star campaigners for the first phase of the forthcoming Uttarakhand assembly election. The list included interim party chief Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, party MP Rahul Gandhi and All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra among other leaders who are set to campaign for the grand old party in the high-stakes election.

In a surprise move, the congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu’s name taken off from the star campaigners list. But CM Charanjit Singh Channi’s name is included in the list. History is the witness that Sidhu always remains the first choice of the Congress High command for star campaigners be it any election in India. This is a big jolt to Sidhu as his name is not included in the star campaigners list. It seems that the Cm Charanjeet Singh Channi becoming the first choice of the congress High Command and Sidhu is being sidelined.

Although, Sidhu is playing a key role for the Punjab Congress in the coming Assembly elections. There is a lot resting on him. He is supposedly close to Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi. Yet, chief minister Channi appears way ahead in the ratings game. Not being one to give up, even when faced with a self assured Channi who assumed the chief minister’s mantle with a refreshingly humble charm.

Taking into the consideration the constraints of campaigning because of the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), the parties are likely to hit the campaign trail in Uttarakhand  in a phased-out manner, including door-to-door campaigning and closed-door meetings.
