Indian students studying in Canada are set to face a major blow, with over 4.27 lakh students expected to encounter difficulties obtaining work permits. According to the Indian government’s statistics, a total of 13,35,878 Indian students are studying abroad, out of which approximately 4,27,000 are in Canada alone. Over the past few years, there has been a staggering 260% increase in the number of Indian students in Canada. However, recent developments suggest that securing study and work permits in Canada could become increasingly difficult for Indian students.
In 2023, Canada issued a total of 5,09,390 study permits, while only 1,75,920 study permits were issued in the first seven months of 2024. The Canadian government has announced plans to reduce the number of study permits to 4,37,000 by 2025. This decision comes in light of the upcoming federal elections, where stricter policies aimed at controlling the number of temporary residents are expected to be implemented.
Challenges in Work Permit Process for Indian Students
Changes in Canada’s policies could lead to limited educational and work opportunities for Indian students. As a result, many may consider applying to study in countries such as the USA, UK, and Australia, where education and visa regulations are currently more favorable. The Canadian government’s decision poses significant challenges for Indian students already studying in Canada, potentially complicating the work permit process. This change could also become a major obstacle for students planning to study in Canada in the coming years.
