The law and order situation in Punjab has been brought into question by senior BJP leaders, following an attack on Punjab BJP SC morcha General Secretary Balwinder Singh. The attack took place at his residence in Jandiala near Amritsar. He is said to have just returned from a campaign in Jalandhar, which he had attended with fellow senior BJP leader Kewal Kumar. Kumar had just dropped him at his residence and continued on to Amritsar city when two assailants on a motorcycle, came up to Balwinder Singh’s front door and rang the doorbell. When Singh came to the door to answer the bell, he was shot in the face. The assailants ran away as Balwinder Singh’s family came out to check what had happened.
Singh was then taken to a private hospital in the area for treatment by his family. Senior police officers such as SSP Amritsar Rural Satinder Singh, reached the crime scene and immediately initiated a probe into the matter. They have stated that they are aware of the gravity of the situation and have refrained from presenting the media with details. The investigation is underway and the Police is likely to furnish the facts as and when the situation allows it. One detail that did make it through about Balwinder Singh was that a bullet has apparently pierced his jaw bone.
The police are scanning CCTV footage in the area to obtain details on the attackers and their identity. Punjab BJP spokesperson Janardan Sharma has commented on the incident, condemning it and questioning the lack of control exercised by the authorities in the state. He was not pleased with the lack of law and order in Punjab and has questioned the government on the matter.
