Netflix will open its account in 2025 with the release of its first major web series named Black Warrant. From the makers of Sacred Games, Black Warrant is a prison drama that revolves around a rookie Tihar Jail Law Officer named Sunil Gupta. Created by Vikramaditya Motwane, and Satyanshu Singh, Black Warrant features Zahan Kapoor, Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakur, Sidhant Gupta, and more in the leading roles. Since the series revolves around Tihar Jail, fans are digging deep into Black Warrant Real Story or Black Warrant True Story. 

Black Warrant is a real story based on Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer, written by Sunil Gupta and Sunetra Choudhury. While Sunetra is a journalist, Sunil Gupta was a real-life former law officer of Tihar Jail. During his tenure at Tihar Jail, Sunil Gupta witnessed at least 8 hangings of criminals in Tihar Jail. 

Sunil Gupta and criminals whose death punishment he witnessed

  • Among the 8 convicts that Sunil Gupta witnessed getting hanged, two of them were Ranga Billa. In 1978, Ranga and Billa had kidnapped two siblings, who had hitched a ride with them in the heart of Delhi, for ransom. However, when the criminals came to know that the brother-sister duo G**ta and Sanjay Chopra were the children of a naval officer, they panicked and killed them after torturing them. The woman victim was raped before she was killed.  Kuljeet Singh alias Ranga Khus and Jasbir Singh alias Billa were awarded the death penalty and executed four years later.
  • Afzal Guru: Sunil Gupta also witnessed the death penalty of terrorist Afzal Guru. Sunil Gupta in an interview revealed that Afzal Guru accepted the death sentence quite maturely. 
  • Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh- Sunil Gupta in an interview said, "Kehar Singh read a religious book and asked- is there any hope of his survival? No one said anything. Satwant did not say anything but he was also scared. The faces of both of them had also turned black before hanging. The bodies of both of them were also not given to the family members."
  • Maqbool Bhat: Gupta also witnessed the hanging of terrorist Maqbool Bhat. Gupta in an interview said, "On the morning of 11 February, SDM met Maqbool Bhat. Maqbool was fair in complexion, but at the time of hanging his face had turned black." Gupta added, "Maqbool was religious in jail. He used to offer Namaaz 5 times a day. His English was very good. Because of this, the jail staff and officers used to take his help. Maqbool was hopeful that he would be released. But, on 6 February 1984, Maqbool's supporters killed Indian diplomat Ravindra Mhatre in Birmingham, UK. After which he was hanged. His body was not even given to his family."
  • Ujagar Singh and Kartar Singh: Vidya Jain was the wife of Delhi's famous surgeon Narendra Jain. On 4 December 1973, she was stabbed to death outside her house in Delhi's Defence Colony. Dr Narendra Jain was the personal eye surgeon of then-President VV Giri. Later it was revealed that Narendra Jain had hired Ujaagar Singh and Kartar Singh to kill Vidya. Delhi High Court sentenced Narendra Jain and his alleged girlfriend Chandresh to life imprisonment in this case. But Ujaagar and Kartar were hanged. They were hanged on 9 October 1983.
