Muslim body Jamiat-e-Ulema has threatened to pursue legal action after a college's fashion show video went viral on social media. As per the video, Muslim women donning burqa walked on the ramp in Uttar Pradesh's Muzzafarnagar. The fashion show was organized by the Shri Ram College in Muzzafarnagar. Notably, organizers stated that the Muzzafarnagar's burqa fashion show was organized to give Muslim women a platform to show their creative side, the videos angered the Jamiat-e-Ulema, who objected to burqa being shown as an "item for fashion display".
A report quoted a student named Alina who participated in the Shri Ram College's burqa fashion show, explained that they wanted to showcase that the burqa could also be fashionable and not just a garment to be worn at home. Dr Manoj, a teacher at Muzaffarnagar's Shri Ram College, supported the students' initiative and was quoted saying that hijab or burqa can boost confidence among Muslim women and that there are growing opportunities in fashion related to these garments globally.
On the other hand, Maulana Mukarram Qasmi, the district convener of Jamiat-e-Ulema, reportedly condemned the show saying that the burqa is not an item for fashion display and that such an act targets a specific religion, potentially hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community. Furthermore, Qasmi warned that if similar events occur in the future, legal action will be taken.
