New Delhi: Canada has tightened its visa regulations, impacting millions of Indians, especially students planning to study there. Following the implementation of these new rules, the number of permit cancellations has increased. Nearly 35-40% of international students in Canada are Indian.
According to the new regulations, border officials have been granted the authority to cancel documents such as Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) and Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), which include work permits and student visas. This move aims to tackle illegal immigration. The Canadian government has empowered border security and immigration officers with more authority, allowing them to revoke any individual’s permit.
Under these new rules, Canadian immigration and border officers can cancel a person’s ETA, TRV, work permit, and study permit if they suspect that the individual will not leave Canada after the permitted duration. Additionally, if a person’s documents are stolen, lost, or destroyed, their permit may also be revoked.
The new regulations further state that if a work or study visa is denied, the applicant’s immigration documents will be canceled. Moreover, if a student’s study permit is revoked, they may face difficulties obtaining a work permit after completing their education. Currently, over 400,000 Indian students are pursuing higher education in Canada.
Canada’s new immigration rules will impact everyone traveling to the country for study, work, or residency. Authorities can now also revoke permits upon obtaining permanent residency or in the event of a person’s death. Additionally, temporary visas can be canceled for individuals using fraudulent documents, providing false information, or having a criminal record.
