Canada’s ‘Express Entry System’ drawing thousands of Indians, even making permanent residents

A point-based Express Entry system, introduced in January 2015, makes it easier for skilled migrants to enter and obtain a permanent residency

New Delhi: Thousands to lakhs of Indian migrate in pursuit of work, education outside the country and Canada is one those few countries where Indian desire to settle down and even become permanent residents. The settling of Indians as permanent residents in Canada is not only the desire of citizens of India but also Canada flexible immigration policy which lures immigrants around the world to settle down there.

Canada continues to value the contribution of its immigrant community. A point-based Express Entry system, introduced in January 2015, makes it easier for skilled migrants to enter and obtain a permanent residency (which is akin to a US green card). Three economic immigration programs are covered by the Express Entry system – these are the Federal Skilled Worker Class, Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Worker Class, Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Trades Class.

During 2019, up to May 1 (which was the latest draw this calendar year), a total of 31,250 Express Entry candidates were issued invites to apply for permanent residency in Canada.

As per David Cohen, “This aggregate figure is higher by 6,750 when compared with number of invites issued at this same point in 2018.”

In 2017, out of the 86,022 invitations sent, those holding an Indian citizenship bagged 36,310 invites (or 42% of the total) under the Express Entry System. A total of 65,401 permanent residents and their families were admitted into Canada, of which 40% were Indians.

To participate in the Express Entry system, a job offers or Canadian work experience is not mandatory, however at least a year of skilled work experience either in Canada or elsewhere is vital. Under this point-based system, candidates complete an online profile and are given a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score (the maximum is 1,200).
