Foreign students in Canada are facing growing challenges as the Canadian government tightens its regulations on student visas. Immigration, refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has sent emails to international students, requesting a variety is documents, including visas, study permits, attendance records, and marks. The move has caused concern, particularly among Indian students, who make up a significant portion of the international student population.
According to a report from the Times of India, many foreign students, including those with visas valid for up to two years, are now being asked to submit additional documentation. One Indian student from British Columbia, whose visa extends until May 2026, expressed surprise after receiving the request. In addition to academic records, the email also sought details about the student’s attendance and part-time employment.
Experts believe this is part of a broader strategy by the Canadian government to reduce the number of international students. Immigration consultant Mehboob Rajwani stated that the government is concerned about students who come to Canada on study visas but end up working full-time, potentially violating their visa terms.
With over 4.2 lakh Indian students currently studying in Canada, the government’s decision has created an atmosphere of uncertainty. Late last week, students from Punjab reported receiving similar emails from IRCC, triggering anxiety across the student community.
In recent years, Canada has seen a significant increase in the number of international students, but this move reflects a shift in policy. The Canadian government appears determined to curb the influx of foreign students, particularly those who may be exploiting their student visas for work opportunities.
The rising tension comes amid safety concerns following several incidents in Canada last week, prompting the Indian High Commission to raise concerns about the safety id its citizens. In response, India issued an advisory urging caution for Indian students living in Canada.
The situation between India and Canada has also been tense following the Canadian Prime Minister’s allegation in September 2023 about the Indian government's involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijar. Diplomatic relations have since deteriorated, with both countries recalling diplomats and accusing each other of harboring anti-national elements. The current crackdown on foreign students students comes amidst this backdrop of escalating tensions.
