Is Novichok a real Russian chemical bomb?
The answer is yes. As mentioned in the movie Novichok, in Russian stands for 'NewComer'. It is one of the deadliest nerve agents ever made. There is no known antidote, and it is eight times more potent than VX Gas.
As per the information available in public domain, Novichok is a family of nerve agents, some of which are binary chemical weapons. The agents were developed at the GosNIIOKhT state chemical research institute by the Soviet Union and Russia between 1971 and 1993.
Novichok agents came to public attention after they were allegedly used to poison opponents of the Russian government, including the Skripals and two others in Amesbury, UK (2018), as well as Alexei Navalny (2020), but civil poisonings with this substance have been known since at least 1995.
Notably, BBC reported in 2020 that the German government said Russia's opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent. Alexei was the most prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was airlifted to Berlin for treatment after falling ill during a flight in Russia's Siberia region. The name Novichok made news in 2018, when Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were attacked in the city of Salisbury in the UK.
Russia has denied any role in Navalny's predicament - or the Skripals' poisoning.
