RATING- 3/10
The third installment of one of the most successful franchises of Punjabi cinema finally released to an expected bumper opening with Housefull shows all day all over the state and beyond but all of this matters less to the paying public who are just there to have a good time and have fun. The first film released in 2012 is a cult classic among all the Punjabi speakers due to its innovative attempt at situational humor which was never done before in the industry but this film shows that milking the same formula all over again will just not work. The film falls flat at making the audiences laugh in many instances out of which many were headache-inducing for me personally, especially the graveyard scene before the interval and so many jokes are tiring and done to death which have been repeated 1000 times in every Punjabi film. The storyline is archaic and very predictable in which logic takes a backseat and the film's writing has many problematic elements such as using rape charges and sleeping with your own sister as a subject of humor, something which will certainly not sit right with the conservative families which makes up for a bulk of audience for Punjabi films. The film also glorifies stalking to woo your crush, sexism, and misogyny among everything to make the audience laugh which will alienate the progressive portion of the audience from it.
We don't expect technical brilliance from Punjabi films due to their low budgets and as expected, there is nothing to write home about with cheap-looking cinematography where the film looks like it has been shot with an iPhone 6, subpar music which fortunately gave me a breather and an excuse to either go to the bathroom or eat something between the movie, annoying comical background score and the less said about the performances, the better. Everyone here thinks that being loud, especially the elderly portion of the cast such as Jaswinder Bhalla and the dialogue writer of the film Naresh Kathooria himself will make the audiences laugh but the obnoxiousness of the over-the-top acting made my ears bleed, to say the least. This film is riddled with overacting from everyone in the star cast which is another lame attempt at being funny. The film has been set in the UK this time rather than India but we all know it is for the subsidy rather than adding artistic value to the film.
Overall, Carry On Jatta 3 falls to the curse of the third installment of a franchise being the worst one out of the lot, and with low iMDB and BookMyShow ratings, I certainly don't see it sustaining well at the box office post-opening weekend. The film will definitely not strike a chord with the majority of urban youth who are well-exposed to international content and families will also reject it due to the problematic jokes which demean females on a whole new level. The makers should understand that storytelling has reached a whole new level and audiences are exposed to American sitcoms as better alternatives so using the same tropes all over again to create such outdated content just won't work in 2023. Recommended only if you want to get a paid headache and can ensure the murder of logic and overacting for almost 2.5 hours, 3/10 and I am being generous with this score!
