The country’s premier Investigative agency CBI has launched a preliminary enquiry against Jalandhar Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal on the corruption allegations against him during his tenure as the SSP of Chandigarh.
Based on the reports, the probe has been initiated at the direction of the Punjab governor and the UT’s administrator Banwari Lal Purohit. The 2009-batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre took over as Chandigarh SSP on inter-cadre deputation on September 29, 2020, for a period of three years, however, he was repatriated to his parent cadre on December 12, 10 months before his tenure was scheduled to end on Purohit’s direction.
In a letter written to Punjab CM, Purohit mentioned “When serious inputs started coming about the misconduct of UT SSP Chahal, I ascertained their authenticity from reliable sources, after which, I communicated telephonically with the chief secretary, Punjab, on November 28, 2022, my decision to remove UT SSP Chahal from the critical post. At the same time, I advised him to send a panel of efficient IPS officers for the post of SSP, UT.”
Although based on the reports the Punjab government has not initiated any inquiry against Chahal to date. Among the allegations involved against Chahal, one major one is his personal involvement in a dispute regarding the vacation of the food court in Elante Mall premises last year. He has been facing accusations of delaying in registering a case of sexual harassment against the city’s one influential person.

Among other sets of accusations, Chahal is caught amidst the wrath of using his powers to back an illegal house occupation. On his return to Punjab, he remained without for a little time, before finally assuming the office of Jalandhar Police Commissioner on January 21st this year.
Interestingly Chahal opted for two days of casual leave before 26th January when Purohit was supposed to unfurl the national flag in Jalandhar.
Chahal joined the Chandigarh Police as ASI before finally becoming an IPS officer in 2009.
