Chandigarh Farmers' Protest came to a halt on Tuesday after 85 leaders of multiple Farmers' Unions were detained by the Police. Almost 16 Farmers Union of Punjab & Haryana were about to march to Chandigarh Sector 17 to demand the MSP and compensation for the damages caused by the floods on crops. Notably, the administration had deployed more than 5 thousand cops in order to stop the farmers to march into the city at various fronts and even sealed the Mohali border. While the cops expected that Chandigarh Farmers Protest may turn violent, the Union called off their march to the Tricity after the detention of their 85 leaders. Now, the decision to march to Chandigarh will be taken after a meeting of the farmers.
Farmers' Protest Chandigarh Updates
Farmers have sat at toll plazas in various districts besides Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Tarn Taran. On the other hand, concrete fronts have been set up outside Longowal police station in Moga and Sangrur. To prevent the message from spreading, the social media accounts of farmer leaders have also been withheld (temporarily blocked). Accounts of farmer leaders Ramandeep Singh Mann, and Gaon Savera have been closed.
The farmers' protest is turning out to be ugly as reports suggest that farmers have opened the gates of the toll plazas and stopped the fastag scanners. Satnam Singh Manochahal, district president of the Tarn Taran Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti was quoted saying that while most of the leaders, including general secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher, have been detained, some have managed to dodge the raiding police parties.
Some of the detained farmers include Savinder Singh Chutala, Ranjodh Singh Gagobua, Tarsem Singh Dhaliwal, and Mukhtiyar Singh Biharipur. Police took the state president of Kisan Sangathan Sukhwinder Singh Sabra into custody inside his house. It is pertinent to mention here that the farmers allege that farmers that they are being searched in buses. Police checked the buses in Jalandhar and surrounding areas. Checked the tickets and IDs of the people so that no farmer could go towards Chandigarh even after sitting in the buses.
More than 5 thousand cops deployed
Talking about the preparations done by the cops ahead of the Chandigarh Farmers Protest, 4 thousand UT Police personnel were deployed on the border of Chandigarh. One and a half thousand cops of Mohali Police were made to stand on the border. DSP level officer has been given the responsibility to stop the farmers. The situation is tense at the Shambhu border of Ambala. From here the farmers of Punjab and Haryana are going to Chandigarh. No farmer is being allowed to cross from here. Due to this, there is a heavy traffic jam at the Shambhu border. Notably, 16 farmers unions of Punjab & Haryana have joined hands for the Chandigarh Farmers Protest.
