The Punjab government has taken an action after the death of Class 10 student, Hirakshi after a tree fell at the Carmel Convent School in Chandigarh. When the tree fell, the girls were having lunch sitting under it. 18 students and an attendant were also injured in the accident. The termites had hollowed out the trunk of this tree. It was declared a 'Heritage Tree' by the Chandigarh Administration in 2017. However, due to lack of maintenance, the tree fell.
Taking action regarding this, reports of all the dry trees in the schools of Punjab have been asked by the government. District education officers have been asked to investigate this immediately. The government has also instructed that if there are such trees, then they should be cut down immediately with the help of the forest department.

The Director of Education said that in Punjab there are many trees near the school buildings, on the ground and in vacant places. In many schools, students sit or play under these trees during lunchtime or sports period. Many of these trees are infested with termites, while many have completely dried up. Their twigs or entire trees can fall at any time due to a storm or any other reason. So a complete list of them should be prepared. They should be cut where necessary for the safety of the school and the students.
