In the latest development, information of mild tremors reported from areas of Royapettah and Anna Salai from Chennai surfaced on social media on Wednesday. Many regarded it as earthquake while some stated that the tremors were felt due to metro work going on near the areas. India Meteorological Department has also not released an official confirmation about the same.
Reportedly, locals of Chennai flooded Twitter with posts regarding earthquake situation witnessed in some areas. However, National Centre for Seismology, New Delhi confirmed that no tremors were reported as per their networks. The Meteorological Department maintain two observatories in Meenambakkam and Kodaikanal and according to it no seismic activity was recorded on Wednesday. Ravikant Singh, Scientist-F, National Center for Seismology, said, “the national network did not record any seismic activity near Chennai.”
Many people also raised concerns that tremors were reported due to Metrorail work but the Chennai Metro Rail Limited tweeted and clarified that its work has not been taken up currently on Anna Salai.
