Chhaava Real Story: Who was  Chhatrapati Sambhaji Mahara?

Played by Vicky Kaushal in the movie Chhaava, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire, ruling from 1681 to 1689. As per the information available, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj took forward his father's name and battled against the Mughal Empire.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was born at Purandar fort to the Maratha Emperor Shivaji, and his first wife, Saibai. Saibai died when Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was only two years old. He was then raised by his paternal grandmother Jijabai. When Sambhaji was only 9 he was sent to live with Raja Jai Singh I of Amber as a political hostage to ensure compliance of the Treaty of Purandar that Shivaji had signed with the Mughals on 11 June 1665. He and his father Shivaji also attended the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's court at Agra on 12 May 1666. Aurangzeb put both of them under house arrest but they escaped on 22 July 1666. Ultimately, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was executed by Aurangzeb.

How did Aurangzeb die?

Multiple reports talk about the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb was the longest-ruling Mughal emperor. As per DNA, Aurangzeb was killed at the age of 88 during a battle with Veer Chhatrasal. However, a few other reports reject that Aurangzeb was killed during a battle. As per Study.com, Aurangzeb died due to natural causes.

In a podcast with Ranveer Allahbadia, Medha Bhaskaran who is the author of Chhatrapati Shivaji's bestselling biography, revealed how Aurangzev died.

Medha Bhaskaran said, "He died a very broken man in the Deccan. In 1707, Aurangzeb died after 27 years of thrilling war... He came to the Deccan in 81, 81 (1681-82) before that he was in Rajasthan."

"Aurangzeb was very disheartened that he could never take over the Maratha kingdom. He used to take forts but then he used to lose them quickly...He died in the camp in Ahmednagar where I was born. He died in the Mughal camp as a frustrated old man whom people made fun of him. All his warriors were also kept away from their families for 27 years. So, he had a very pathetic death."
