Chhath Puja 2024
Chhath Puja comes a few days after Diwali. Every year Chhath Puja starts from the Chaturthi date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month and ends on Saptami Tithi. This festival starts with the tradition of Nahay Khay on the first day and the ritual of Kharna is completed on the second day. On the third day of Chhath Puja i.e. on the Shashthi date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, arghya is given to the setting sun. After this, on the fourth day, Saptami Tithi, the Chhath festival concludes by offering arghya to the rising sun.
In Hinduism, everyone offers water or arghya to the rising sun, but during Chhath Puja, arghya is also given to the setting sun on the third day. Do you know what is the belief behind this?
What is offered as arghya to the setting sun?
Arghya is offered to the setting sun on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. On this day, standing in a pond or river in the evening, the fasting people offer arghya to the setting Sun God. The belief behind this is that at the time of setting, the Sun God is with his second wife Pratyusha. By offering Arghya at this time, every problem in life goes away and all wishes are fulfilled.
The main reason for offering Arghya to the setting sun is that the setting of the sun represents that phase of life when the time comes to reap the fruits of a person's hard work and penance. Offering Arghya to the setting sun maintains balance, power and energy in life. Offering Arghya to the setting sun shows that after every rise in life there is a fall, and after every fall there is a new dawn.
